Looking to get a new phone...is the Defy worth it?
  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

I have to get a new phone, but I have very little money. I'll pay for the G2 if I absolutely have to, but I'm tempted by the Defy because it's on sale (the MyTouch 4G is, too). One thing I don't like is that neither the Defy nor the MyTouch 4G has a slide-out keyboard and I don't like to solely use the on-screen keyboard. Is the Defy a good phone? Is the G2 better? Which phone of these three is the most customizable and easy to root, etc.? Which one has the most development going on around it?

  • KhalifaKhalifa February 2011

Lol bro. G2 is probably way better. IMO get the g2.

  • haldi15haldi15 February 2011

i got the mytouch on sunday and i love this phone and if youre going to get a new phone get the g2 since you dont want the mytouch

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

Yeah I agree with Khalifa the G2 is the best one a lot more developement that I've seen, has highest OC when OCed, its pure vanilla, and defy still has motoblur if I remember correctly, overall the G2 specs are just better, the deal breaker for me would be the physical keyboard though I can't live without one. MT4G would come in 2nd for me, yeah it has a higher clock without oc but I don't see as much developement for it, if u like htc sense then that one is for u (I think it has htc sense) then defy is just destruction proof lol (though the G2 has a kevlar coating, so I've heard) id say get the defy if you would love to text, record, listen to the radio, all while showering or swimming lol

  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

@Jose thanks a lot for the info. im definitely leaning toward the G2. its just that i dont see any great sales involving the G2. (i know one just ended, but my phone broke when it broke, unfortunately, and that was after that sale ended). anyone know of any sales going on involving the G2?

  • haldi15haldi15 February 2011

radioshack has them for $99 here in new york

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

Yeah over here in cali they have them for $99 too so I think its in all US

  • HandlerExploitHandlerExploit February 2011

I got both the mt4g and the defy and I can say that they are both equally awesome.

  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

i see that, in order to have the "Tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing" capability, i have to pay an extra $14.99/month. obviously, im not gonna pay that, but does that mean that i wont be able to use wireless tethering even if i root the phone?

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

If I remember correctly if u root ur phone and for ex if we use the G2 for example and u install CyanogenMod I'm pretty sure u are able to teather for free, I know for sure with barnacle, and like I said before I'm pretty damn sure that the ones that CM includes in their build is free too

  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

thats great because, seriously, its ridiculous that theyre just trying to tack on a $15/month charge for the capability. i barely use wireless tethering because i dont really have a need for it (and i wouldnt use it in place of my regular home wifi like some ppl have been known to do), but id like to be able to use it just in case im on the road or something and i need to use my laptop.

  • lowsnamebrandlowsnamebrand February 2011

I own the g2 amazing phone even unrooted(I want to root it but I'm worried about messing up lol) it has the tethering built in and I've used it but never got charge so I'm guessing that's only with exstensive use

Get the MT3GS it's a wonderful phone and a total workhorse since it came out.

It's older yes but it's OC-able to 864 from 600 it's got the physical keyboard and it's easy to root (if you follow instructions well!)  Also Im now running CyanogenMod 7 and it rocks.  It's also cheaper, and it's not end of life yet.  It comes with 2.1 and full HTC Sense just fyi.

    Just a thought.

Nexus One, its my fav phone (im buying it): Cyanogen personally makes the rom for the phone, outstanding 1000MHZ, CM7, Huge Screen, LIGHT UP TRACKBALL. Personally its the best phone around for me, root it and its amazing! :)

Found one for $299.99 Unlocked, Rooted and CM7. Already tested it, awsome phone. Only con is that since im in T-Mo I only get EDGE with an unlocked N1.

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

I would try to prevent buying a already rooted and or unlocked phone due to the fact that I've seen they usually cost more :/
And since I can root the device myself and with you guys here in SA ill for sure get it done

  • nonextstopnonextstop February 2011

I thought that the slide-out keyboard was needed for me too. But when I got my Slide, I realized that the soft keyboard was actually a lot faster. If you have a Cliq or Cliq XT, don't completely throw out the idea of only using the touch keyboard, because the small screen is what makes it so difficult.

  • neoslink1neoslink1 February 2011

sorry to just chime in, but i had this question too. is the defy's touch responsiveness oodles better than the cliq's? Because my cliq keeps breaking and im kind of getting sick of dealing with them on the phone (they bicker with me for an hour or two then charge me 10 dollars to ship me a new cliq) im thinking im gonna go in to the store and actually talk to someone face to face. im on my 5th cliq XD and they way i see it, the indestructibility of the defy should hold me until my next upgrade. but i'd like opinions. i am in highschool. what phone would be best?

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

Well I u just want it to hold until ur next update the defy should be enough man. I wanna get the G2 soon but maybe by the time id be able to get it other good phones will be out lol but the defy seems good, just my opinion though

  • neoslink1neoslink1 February 2011

@Jose that's what i was thinking. just looking for some verification. thanks.

  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

thanks for your input, everybody. i decided to get a G2 in the end, but it was pretty close between the G2 and the MYT3G. i considered all your suggestions and appreciate them a lot.

got the G2 tonight, picked it up, then immediately rooted it, lol! it wasnt too difficult to root, but it was a little nerve-wracking when you had to type the lines directly into terminal emulator because one little thing could brick the phone. but, it looks and feels so much better than the cliq. it really is amazing. i didnt get to play with the MYT3G or the Defy that much, but i would highly recommend the G2.

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

Congragulations on ur new baby ;p lol
I feel u on the nerve wrecking I went through the same thing as I did it on my dads phone, so my life was hanging in the balance lol I would highly recommend using a cyanogenmod rom
But anyways like I said congragulations ;)

  • nobreak1970nobreak1970 February 2011

If you can get CM7 for it I HIGHLY recommend it.  It's awesome on my slide and it's still in nightly alpha for us slide owners, can't tell though cause it's smooth!

  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

@nobreak1970 thanks for your suggestion. i tried to get cyanogenmod last night but it seems so confusing to me. maybe this is a stupid question and i am still a bit of a newb, but i cant seem to find where to download the actual rom. furthermore, i thought i found a download for cm6 or some version of it and i tried it out and it worked, but it didn't include the android market, so there was no way for me to restore my apps or anything. i cant seem to find any tutorial on installing cm7 or where to find the actual download. think you could point me in the right direction?

  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

also from what i can piece together, it seems that cyanogenmod wants you to download his roms through rom manager, but it seems that you need the paid version to do so. is that correct? if so, is there a way around that?

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

Like most things there are illegal ways around andi wouldn't recommend it but we can't force u not to do it so its ur decision
As for the google apps not being there its because google had a talk with cyanogen saying he can't include them in his build so u have to dowload them seperately
And if u want to download the cyanogen rom ill see if I can find them and post links once I get home from school

  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

@Jose i downloaded the file at this link (http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/files/file/211-update-cm-700-rc1-vision-signedzip/), but im just not sure that this is what im supposed to be downloading. its not clear to me.

also, i get the part about not including the gapps, but i dont know how to "push" apps to my card or how i would even download them elsewhere just directly onto my computer. i dont think it would be difficult for me to figure out how to push them, but i dont have anything to push. thats my problem. i just dont know where you get something like the android market app. would you recommend getting the paid version of rom manager?

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

I would highly recommend getting the paid version of rom manager, it is a lot better then you'd be able to get the nightlies of cyanogen and instead of going through the whole hassle you'd just have to use rom manager to download the google apps and any cyanogen rom, then when u install through rom manager it asks u if u want to download the google apps with it so that helps too so in general rom manager helps a lot so like I said id highly recommend it

  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

@Jose alright, I got the paid version of rom manager as you suggested and i gotta admit, im already loving the purchase. its so easy to use! all this time (with my cliq), i was wiping the dalvik cache with the terminal emulator, doing the nandroid backups after booting into recovery, wiping, etc the long way. this way is just so much simpler since everything is rolled into one process and you even do specific parts and not others.

anyway, i downloaded cm7 and flashed it and everything worked out, but im having one issue and perhaps you might know what the problem is. my wireless doesnt seem to work: when i try to turn on the wireless by hitting the button on the widget, the notification pull-down screen, or even on the wifi settings screen, the little green bar turns on but only to some intermediate level - its not all the way green and its not off completely, either. it says that its scanning for networks and, after about 30 seconds, it stops trying and the green bar goes from dim to off completely. it does this every time i press it and ive even tried rebooting and everything. when i was using stock, the wireless worked fine and i had no issues with it at all. it seems to be something that occurs specifically with cyanogenmod because originally i had stock, then went to cyanogenmod 6.4 and it started doing what i explained above. then, i wiped everything, rebooted, and it worked again, and, now, after flashing cyanogenmod 7, its started again. have any ideas?

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

well, i just flashed my dads with Cyanogen 7 :O omg i have been waiting for that and he finally agreed, it feels soooooo much smoother :D they took some options out though :/ but they added some nice ones :)

i have ran into the issue as mentioned above with wifi, ill look into it though and ill post my findings :)

and im glad you like it @mulhod its the greatest investment any user can make ;)

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq February 2011

ok well it turned out that my router was out of range when i tested the WiFi so cross that out

and about yours not working, which Cyanogen 7 are you using the nightlies??? cause ive seen that some of the nightlies had problems at one point, and if so id download the stable Cyanogen 7 wifi seems to work from what ive been playing with :)

  • mulhodmulhod February 2011

@Jose thanks for helping me out. as for what i have: im not using the nightly builds. when i got rom manager, i went to "Download rom" --> Free CyanogenMod --> CyanogenMod 7.0.0-RC1. Over on the forums on cyanogenmod.com (here, specifically), i see that theyre talking about this issue a lot. the common theme is that, if you reboot, it should fix itself. however, some ppl (including myself) are still having problems after doing this. so, what im gonna try to do is do a full wipe and everything and then re-flash the rom and see if that solves the issue.
