For anyone that has problems with this, I had to learn the hard way. If your new avatar doesn't appear (like mine wouldn't here at SA) you must delete the old pic first, it should then pop up. This is how I made it work for here and twitter. As stupid as this may sound, i was getting frustrated because it wouldn't show up. This is how I made it work.
