How to UnBrick or flash a Defy firmware(.sbf)
  • JBoogieBopJBoogieBop December 2010

First if you dont have the drivers you can get them here http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/Handset_USB_Driver/?pubid=987654

Get the firmware of you choice from here http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy

Then You will need RsdLite which you can google and find(not sure if im allowed to post it here)

Boot your phone into bootloader mode( hold volume up and power button) then plug it you pc with the usb

open rsd lite and click on the button to select file name and select your .sbf

It will now flash it and will reboot to the new firmware.

Here is the uk sbf if anybody needs a different link. http://www.mediafire.com/?c9998ff6k4v9jvw needs to be extracted from the rar

  • PathPath December 2010

    One question;

Which firmware should be chosen if one lives in any other country than those listed? Is it possible to see somewhere in the phone itself which area it comes from?

  • HandlerExploitHandlerExploit December 2010

Their is only one current SBF. So if you brick, you only have one choice.

I am stuck in a boot loop and I am getting this error: "Failed flashing process. Unable to retrieve initialization values from INI file. (0x7029); phone connected" I read posts that suggest you need RSDLite 4.6 so I downloaded that to make sure I have the right version. My phone is being identified as S Flash OMAP3630. I am running Win XP 32bit. Any ideas??? I am seriously stuck!

**EDIT** Ahh...looks like 4.6 is even outdated now...thanks @JboogieBop for the tip on 4.9.

  • FilipitripiFilipitripi January 2011

I have a big boot loop, and dont can solve it. I flash all the existing sbf and wipe and nothing, only boot loop...
    Any idea ¿?¿

  • rbeier1221rbeier1221 January 2011

Just make sure you wipe both before and after the flash...if you are doing so already I am not sure..

  • mrlamar09mrlamar09 January 2011

and this can b used on a moto cliq im sorry im a noob to this forum

  • FilipitripiFilipitripi January 2011

I wipe before and after, and boot loop continue...

  • Double0EKDouble0EK January 2011

try removing the radio.img from the .sbf you are using. Then try it again.

  • TS77UKTS77UK January 2011

I have wiped the drive and the cache, then I installed 64bit drivers from Motorola, then I downloaded the UK .sbf file and opened up RSDLite and selected the .sbf file and nothing happens.  It doesnt show the phone on RSD Lite, and my phone still shows the system recovery screen.

At the bottom of the screeen though, it does say "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"

If I reboot, then I just get the Motorola logo constantly

    What can I do?

  • joeyarroyojoeyarroyo January 2011

Which one do i choose from the list?!! im stuck in the bootlop after flashing the 2.2 chinese sbf :/

  • rbeier1221rbeier1221 January 2011

@TS77UK you should not be in recovery for flashing the sbf file. You need to be be in bootloader mode. Hold the volume key up (instead of down) while booting. Also make sure you have the latest version of RSDLite or it might not recognize the phone.

  • rbeier1221rbeier1221 January 2011

@joeyarroyo any of them should work, just make note that 2.5.1 is hard to work with and I would not recommend it.

Also if you are trying to flash a 2.2 rom from a 2.1 rom you may need to flash the 2.2 boot only. It can be found on XDA. This may be the cause of your boot loop.

  • joeyarroyojoeyarroyo January 2011

@rbeier1221i was able to flash the rom. And with the 3g fix i also got hspa which is great. But i did find that the google apps and latitude and nav wont work... is there any fix for that?

  • rbeier1221rbeier1221 February 2011

Sorry I didn't reply sooner...there are google apps files you may need to install separately. If you haven't fixed it yet, what issue are you seeing with Navigation?

  • flusi100flusi100 February 2011

As mentioned above, there's just the last link working in the rom-download area referred to in the first post. Because of several reasons I want to downgrade from my 2.2 back to 2.1.
Is there any possibility do download the stock version with blur for AT or UK?

  • D3rR0fl3rD3rR0fl3r February 2011

Same problem here... Somebody got the German (DE, AT, CH) Rom and could upload it?..

  • fissicsfissics February 2011

I can only get into bootloader. I have the latest version of RSDLite and I'm trying to flash UK 2.1. I receive the "Failed flashing process" error.

I can't get into System Recover to do any wipes. I just get the android fella with an exclamation mark. Any ideas?

  • Dewman4lifeDewman4life February 2011

@Fissics after you see android fella touch the lower right side of the screen to get into recovery

  • ericmeloericmelo February 2011

does anyone know how to get 3g back

  • SowmanSowman March 2011

It says flashing process failed unable to retrieve values from INI files phone connected -.-
    WHAT DO I DO!!
    stuck on boot logo -.-

  • AIVASAIVAS April 2011

My system failed to detect the phone, all I had to do was browse to the RSD install directory, right click SDL.exe and select "Run As Administrator". It then found and flashed my Motorola Defy. :)

  • makuleromakulero April 2011

I did everything as instructed, but when the RSD Lite finishes it says PASS and my phone should restart but it doesn't. It remains dead and I can't make it work. Now even if I want to start it with VOL UP and POWER button, nothing happens. I have a spanish Vodafone version, which ROM should I download? Although nothing appears on the screen, my PC still recognises it and it shows as connected on port 1 in RSD Lite. I've tried with various versions of ROMs but every time the same thing happens. Please help!

  • oshoruneoshorune May 2011

Just make sure to have newest version of RSDlite

  • CoquesCoques May 2011

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem. Telephone is recognized by a PC, but it has black screen only when I press start button, nothing more.
    Any idea what's wrong? Thx.
    RSD 4.9 used.

  • nourlangienourlangie August 2011

I have the exactly same as makulero and coques. I use RDS 4.9
    Help please!!!

  • nourlangienourlangie August 2011

Hello makulero and Coques, I have resolve the problem (was exactly the same like
yours) by flashing with the following:
    JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_179-4.4_VFSBLUR_SIGN_SIGNED_USAJRDNEMARAB1B8VFES03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYOVFES_P028_A018_M002_HWp3_Service1FF.sbf
    RSd.Lite5.3.1

    ¡Suerte!

  • Wizardus86Wizardus86 October 2011

    JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_177-005_NORDIC_SIGN_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTNORD_P003_A001_HWp3_Service1FF

I've flashed to this sbf with the latest RSD lite (5.3.1) and the phone just won't boot properly. I pass the motorola logo, but the flashin android sign just stuck and flickers.

the phone has Cyanogen 7 on it, but crashed and stucked in boot looping. Friend said to wipe the cache, but the factory recovery won't work, i only got the "android fella with exclamation mark" and i can't get any further.

So i've flashed to Froyo nordic 2.2.2, but the problem stays

Have i killed my phone? PLZ HELP
