Upcoming Upgrade
  • rachelm920rachelm920 November 2011

I was just discussing my account with T-mobile and they told me I qualify for a full upgrade on 12/26. Merry Christmas to me!

I just don't know what to get. I've been eyeballing the HTC Amaze, which will most likely get a ICS upgrade, but I'm so used to my Cliq and it's physical keyboard that I'm afraid to switch. Then I heard that HTC phones are very delicate... I can't count the number of times I've dropped my Cliq.

Then I was looking at the Samsung Galaxy S II, my hubbie has a Samsung (Vibrant) and I honestly don't like the whole way Samsung is setup, and then there's the color problems with bleeding...

I just don't know what to do :-( I've been itching for a new phone but at the same time I just don't know if t-mo has any phones that fit me right now.

What has everyone else that had a Cliq gone to? Is it a hard switch from having the physical keyboard to none?

  • Double0EKDouble0EK November 2011

I'm getting the MT4GS its free w/ a 2yr Contract. The Sensation is $99 w/ a 2yr Contract also. I like keyboards and the wife likes candybar phones. So its kinda funny because she has the CliqXT and I have the Cliq so its a big upgrade for us..lol

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq November 2011

Sensation xD of course I miss the keyboard but I use SwiftKey and its pretty darn good :)
Ummm... It's basically just like the Amaze but it doesn't have NFC (if it makes a difference) and and idk that's basically it, the Sensation has the Amaze camera ported to it and it already has CM7 and MIUI and sense 3.5. The kernel on the Sensation is more mature and has amazing battery life. I'm also working on an ICS port with someone from xda... Ummm yeah... The Sensation is not only sensational but it's a phone to amaze hehe (pun intended)

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq November 2011

@Double0EK very big upgrade lol. I remember when I first got my Sensation I was like omg!!! And now it's even faster with all the development so I hope you all feel like that :)

  • Double0EKDouble0EK November 2011

    Oops should've refreshed..

    What's NFC?

  • rachelm920rachelm920 November 2011

Really! And what a price difference too!! The Sensation refurbished is $99. IDK if that makes a difference or not.

I know here the 32GB expandable is referring to the SD Card but what is 16GM EMMC? That's new lingo to me...
Also @jassycliq what is NFC? IDK if I'd like MIUI, it's too iPhoneish to me LOL

The left is Sensation, right is Amaze

    768 RAM / 4GB ROM / 32GB expandable16GM EMMC with 1 GB RAM / 32GB expandable

  • Double0EKDouble0EK November 2011

$99 brand new @ BestBuy for the Sensation.

EMMC = Electronic Multi-Media Card. It has something to do with flash memory. Just had to quickly google it. Don't know too muchm

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq November 2011

Amaze has the same memory type as sensation. Emmc only difference is amaze has 16gb built in.

NFC is near field communication, the thing that google wallet uses to pay for things wirelessly and so on.

    :)

Also id recommend wirefly.com they usually have the best prices. Also if you tweet them they might give you a code for something xD

  • Double0EKDouble0EK November 2011

I tried to look on wirefly from my phone but it didn't work. Still didn't get my laptop fixed so I don't have any pc to browse on..

  • alarmdude9alarmdude9 November 2011

I personaly went to the cliq2. Its not the most flashy dashy phone but it is a good solid phone and so far has taken a beating in the 9 months i have had it. The best i can say is that it is what the original cliq should have been. And there is some dev work happening on it as well. I am running 2.3.4 gingerbread and cm7 is all but totaly ported to the phone.

  • rachelm920rachelm920 November 2011

@alarmdude9 I was originally thinking of the Cliq2, back when it first came out, but when I saw it I wasn't totally in love with it and Motorola was soooo slow with the upgrades for the Cliq

  • jaydubjaydub November 2011

@rachelm920 Since I started working at T-Mobile I have had a lot of time to play with the phones :-) Since I know you will be Modding the phone, I would go with either the Galaxy S2 or the sensation as @JassyCliq suggested both have CM7 and MIUI already. The S2 has a OC kernel running at 1.8 if you like speed ;-) BTW I thought the same thing about MIUI but it is now my daily ROM for my G2X (also a great phone if you want something more affordable) And as for the keyboard you get used to it and its getting hard to find good phones with a keyboard ( take the double play and mytouch q for example)

  • troutslayermvtroutslayermv November 2011

I put a lot of thought into what phone i would like when it came time for me to upgrade and i played with just about every phone out right now till i settled on the galaxy s 2 . Its not perfect but dam near close too it and of all the phones out this one seems to be the best. I would save your self a lot of frustration and get the s2, trust me. They don't make phones like they use to and the cliq is a far better phone then its given credit for. I love my s2 and wouldn't want any other phone and i don't miss the physical keyboard at all lol. Hope you get the phone you want good luck

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq November 2011

    Let me just say...

qHD > > > 800x600 tehehe especially on that 4.6" screen. I will say this that the s2 has a gorgeous display... Still have heard tons of issues on the pixels and crap.

  • samygsamyg November 2011

I hope all u guys here won't hate me for this, but..
@rachelm920 i just bought a HTC Mozart for my GF. It runs Windows phone 7, and i fell in love with it the minute it turned on. takes 15-20 seconds to boot up. is amazingly fluid. and it is very well integrated with ur social networks. The UI is clean and intuitive (more so than iOS or android). U tend to spend less time on ur phone.
The only thing is: buy a WP7 if ur done with modding and all this. Frankly, i didn't feel the need to mod it much, and there is a lot of development going on at xda for WP7 too.
Do ur research, it's just another suggestion to confuse u.:-)

  • troutslayermvtroutslayermv November 2011

Windows phones have nice animations but that's about as far as they go lol android is king and so far sgs2 is the best. Even people that have gotten the nexus s have gone back to the sgs2 . You would have to have it for a day to understand . Just playing with one in the store isn't enough .I've had a few phones at home for a week or 2 and so far the s2 is the shiz . Its so smooth and stable and the display ? Omg ! Just beautiful . Animations are beautiful and the dialer doesn't lag at all. That's a big one I've noticed . Just look at the benchmark scores ! Its pretty much at the top. Depending on the test you run.

  • Double0EKDouble0EK November 2011

    Laughing My Filipino Ass Off!!

  • Double0EKDouble0EK November 2011

    Damn "Double" post

  • samygsamyg November 2011

@troutslayermv i totally agree. SGS2 is awesome, but i just gave another suggestion, if anyone wants to go with a WP7, it's pretty amazing too.:-)

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq November 2011

Like @rachelm920 said, she doesnt like samsung... Personally I say that it depends on the phone... the Vibrant was pretty darn good... but you had to mess around with it... A LOT. Then the GPS problems and so on. Super AMOLED is great screen but for the huge screen that the SGS II has (4.6") the 800x600 resolution is too big O.o Reason for high benchmark scores is because how little it has to work compared to qHD devices... Plastic... yeah, im not a fan of it...

Now good things of SGS II... Super AMOLED! :D Amazing screens for sure. Stock battery is huge also. NFC is also pretty cool, it'll be pretty useful when Android 4.0 comes around so that you can share whatever is on your screen (Android Beam) That is if you have other people with an Android 4.0 phone and NFC :)
Speed... Ummm... I don't say benchmarks are worthy to say its better cause of that... (I was able to make my Stock Sensation with an early kernel (not yet mature) be able to score near 5000... That is with Sense!!! Hogs like heck -_-)
Now another nice thing that about the SGS II, Samsung itself... which can be a great thing but yet be a headache... I'm sure rachel knows that lol

Sensation has already been talked about... Need i say more? Oh yeah, smaller screen... but higher resolution... yeah ok done with that

Now I would like to put another device on the line maybe? You're contract is over during the Christmas season but if you wait a little big longer you could possibly get a better phone? Heck maybe the Galaxy Nexus may come out for T-Mobile xD Which nothing would be better than a Nexus phone. Idk just went off on a rant :)

  • ngiordanongiordano November 2011

    Nexus S 99.99 on wirefly.com for T-Mobile :-)

  • troutslayermvtroutslayermv November 2011

I've heard that the only thing good about the nexus s is android 4.0 other then that it isn't that great . On xda a few people went back to sgs2 and decided to just wait for ics . I think there is no perfect phone but from all the ones I've used sgs2 is one of the best. The atrix is pretty bad ass too but its not available due to the atrix 2 coming out. I had the atrix and atrix2 for awhile and atrix 1 is deff better and there are some mods to have the webtop without the dock. Honesty if i could of got another atrix 1 i would have but i had a lot of issues with the atrix 2 so i moved away from Motorola . So like we have all been sayin its up to the user and there needs . But i disagree with the comment about not much running on the sgs2 , it has duel 1.2 gig processor and with all the animations and touchwiz its still fast with crazy benchmark scores stock! People have mod on there sgs2 gettin scores over 10,000 so yeah...that's insane lol

  • troutslayermvtroutslayermv November 2011

Fyi after talkin with a Samsung rep quote "we have been testing and preparing for the release of ics even before the release of the sgs2 . Ics update will be released very soon" as we all know ics Is optimized for duel core so we should see some amazing things from the s2 very soon ;-)

  • RhandyRhandy November 2011

    @rachelm920
    In my personal opinion:
If you want a Physical Keyboard, go with the myTouch 4G Slide.

If you can live without the Keyboard, go for the Amaze 4G.
The Amaze 4G is better than the Sensation and it's newer, that means that it might get official upgrades for longer time.
And about modding, it's true that the Sensation already has CM7 and MIUI support, but it's just a matter of time for the Amaze 4G to catch up with it.

  • rachelm920rachelm920 November 2011

Well... @samyg I'm an android gal for life... ppl have tried to sell me on Blackberry and iPhone it just doesn't work...

I was looking a bit at the phones that Walmart had today while Xmas shopping for the kiddies (of course they're dummy models) and the sensation is smaller than I thought. I was thinking it was gonna be bigger... they didn't have the amaze but I know they're relatively the same size. My hubbie is actually getting the Galaxy S 4G in a few days... long story...

I have a Samsung 52" in my living room and absolutely LOVE it, was the best display they had in the store. For some reason though, before I had an android, I went through about 7 Samsung Gravity phones, they would constantly lose service, I'd call tmobile and complain, and they'd send me another... same thing. At that point I vowed I'd never buy another Samsung phone again LOL. I then went with the Motorola Cliq, because I always got good service on my Motorola Razr. It seems that these days, Motorola makes all their good phones for Verizon :-( which isn't fair since T-mobile had the FIRST android phone...

    Now I'm ranting....

Anyhow, I probably will be waiting until a bit after Xmas to get the upgrade, since I will be broke due to Xmas LOL and also my daughter's bday is Dec. 28th, she'll be turning 5, so I have to throw her a party as well... that is unless the hubs surprises me with a phone for xmas...or the day after

  • rachelm920rachelm920 November 2011

BTW is the Sensation/Amaze a HDPI phone or MDPI?

  • Calz_cliqCalz_cliq November 2011

I believe its HDPI. I too have had an upgrade available right now but i cant make up my mind on what phone to get between the sensation or gs2 as well.

  • JassyCliqJassyCliq November 2011

Its HDPI but heres the catch the sub-category is qHD, some things wont play nicely from pure HDPI ;)

  • rachelm920rachelm920 November 2011

Hmmmm.... I'm still undecided especially with the qHD thing going on. That'll make it difficult for me to theme. Maybe I will keep an eye on tmo news and see if they have any other phones upcoming in Jan-Feb.

  • rachelm920rachelm920 November 2011

Now looking more at the S2, I am actually tempted by it... I'm gonna wait till hubbie gets his S1 and see how I like it.

  • ngiordanongiordano November 2011

S2 looks great. Awesome user reviews.
