Gonna need a little more information in order for anyone to help you out. Like current ROM, the error your getting and security type(if any) on your wifi router. A logcat would be best if possible.

i currently have CM-7-1, but it wasn't working even with the stock 1.6.1
all it tells me when i try to turn on wifi is err.
the wifi mac address comes up as unavailable

It sounds like a hardware issue. It could be something as simple as the WiFi cable became unattached to something completely unfixable like a chip burn-out =/

I have incurred the same problem, but my wifi did work until I started using barnacle tether. Now is says connecting and disconnecting. Can anyone help?

Try a dalvik wipe. If that doesn't work you may need to wipe data. I suspect the app may have left something that isn't agreeing.

if i wipe data, do i need to reinstall the whole rom?
