[Solved] Cliq (CM7.1) gets hot and restarts on 3G network
  • OnTheRocksOnTheRocks September 2011

This is a hot topic! (Sorry.)

My network has recently upgraded in the area where I work from 2G (standard GSM/GPRS) to 3G (UMTS/HSDPA). This is a positive change and I'm now getting data speeds of around 3Mb on my little Cliq.

However, since they made the change, I've noticed that during daily use at work, the phone gets exceptionally hot (battery temperature of 40+ degrees C) and eventually restarts itself, usually when I've left it alone for ten minutes or so.

I'm not overclocking or overworking it (I think) - I'm using the Smartass CPU governor and a max clock speed of 528MHz. It's the "CyanogenMod-7-09012011-NIGHTLY-CLIQ" mod, with the "2.6.29.6_ngiordano_1" kernel. I'm not running any other mods--it's just plain CM7.

Forcing the phone back to the old 2G network fixes the problem, but I'd quite like to use the nice new 3G tower! I'm worried I'll break something if I keep using it at such high temperatures.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Are u on the latest nightly? I think not.. If not, go to http://www.simply-android.com/discussion/1617/rom-cyanogenmod-7-for-cliqdext-ongoing-nightly-updates/p1 and update by following instructions. Better still, do a full wipe and reinstall with latest nightly.
That should fix the heating issue.
Let me know how it goes.
Edit: our phones do get a bit hot on continuous 3G usage, but mine never restarted. Just saying. A reflash should fix urs too.

He is on the latest but wiping and reflashing might solve the problem. Don't back up/restore android home or system settings only apps and data, mms, sms and call logs, although manually reinstalling your apps from market would give you the cleanest install...but also a big pain in the butt to do it that way.
BTW--I am also using same nightly you are without problems so don't think it's the ROM

    Thanks guys :)

I don't actually hold that many apps on the phone so it won't take many minutes to get them reinstalled. I'll try a wipe and let you know how it goes.
