what is a recovery image and do i need it to flash a rom...how to flash a rom

ok i am a newb at rootinf and i just rooted my cliq. i found a rom i want to flash on it but i dont know how. i saved it to the root of my sd card turned off my cliq then booted into recovery pressed alt l but i do not c the rom to flash it.. is there a step im missing should i wipe it then maybe it will show the rom to flash..please help

@jstylz - Yes you need it to flash a ROM.
I wouldn't have given you those instuctions on M3 if you didn't need it.

you need to install a custom recovery use this app to install one, i recommend using ClockworkMod 4.0.5

You do need a custom recovery. There are several ways to flash one. The easiest is to go to market and search ADLX. There you'll see 1-click recovery flasher. Install and select the recovery of your choice. Little side note: in there there's Amon_ra recovery. That is best for older ROM's and is not compatible with some of the newer ROM's
